MONDAYS ENRICHMENTS

Academic Support – Instructors: Inclusion Department

Babysitting 101- Instructor: Kellie Keenan

Grades: 6/7/8

This is a certification course implemented by the American Safety and Health Institute. Students will learn safety first aid, early childhood development and infant and toddler care.

Cooking with Chef Laura– Instructor: Chef DeSantis

Grades: ALL

Students will help prepare, sample and create a variety of foods. Students will have hand-on instruction in all aspects of culinary art.

Cribbage- Instructors: Zack Mackay and Thomas McEnaney** 8th Grade Students

Grades: 4/5/6

Students will learn to play the game of cribbage. Once students know how to play, small tournaments will be set up.

Crochet- Instructor: Dominique Dart

Grades: ALL

Students will make a series of “granny squares” which they can then turn into scarves, blankets and covers.

Fantasy Design- Instructor: Jane Howell

Grades: 6/7/8

Let your imagination run wild in this craft workshop. During this enrichment you’ll design a t-shirt, stained glass candleholder, Plaster of Paris mosaics, create shell and button jewelry and work with block prints.

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN T-SHIRT AND GLASS JAR.

Hip-Hop Dance- Instructor: Guillermo Pomales

Grades: ALL

What to dance to music? This class is about dancing to hip-hop and R&B music in a group. The instructions will show you basic moves to be put together in a choreographed dance production. Beginner and Experienced students welcome.

Independent Study – Instructor: Mike Ruth

This will be a quiet environment for you to complete homework.

It is recommended that each student sign up for one Independent Study per week. Students may be required by their advisory teacher to take at least one Independent Study.

Math Mania I- Instructor: Katie Souza

Grades: 4/5/6

Students will improve their math skills by working on MCAS type problems. This is a required 2-day Enrichment for identified students. Others may choose to attend on one or both days (Mondays and Fridays).

Math Mania II- Instructor: Jed O’Connor

Grades: 7/8

Students will improve their math skills by working on ALEKS, our web-based math tutorial. This is a required 2-day Enrichment for identified students. Other may choose to attend on one or both days. (Mondays with Mr. O’Connor and/or Wednesdays with Mrs. Cullen-Hamzeh)

MCCPS Musical- Instructor: Adria Smith

** Must commit to two days for this performance!**

A MCCPS Musical is finally here! “Into the Woods” is a two- term commitment for Monday enrichment. It involves strong singing and acting skills. You must be brave enough to perform and sing, solo, on stage! The musical, “Into the Woods”, is a wonderful collection of funny and twisted fairy tales mingled together. Rehearsals are Mondays and Fridays during enrichment, for two terms: we plan to perform just after the March exhibition. This is the first MCCPS school musical!

Set Design-MCCPS MUSICAL – Instructor: Quincy Carpenter

Help support the MCCPS Musical and become a member of the stage crew. This group will design, construct and set up the set for the first ever MCCPS Musical.

Spelling Bee- Instructor: Molly Dunne

Grades: 5/6/7/8

Learn the skills and strategies to becoming a spelling bee champion. Students will practice words, learn about etymology and have practice rounds.

The Happy Ducky Store – Instructor: Kathy Cormier

The MCCPS Store continues….the second season was extremely successful, with almost $700 in profits. In this enrichment, students will learn the ins and outs of running a retail business, from advertising to merchandising, selling goods which we’ll collect from various Enrichments and ordering insignia items. Our goal is to keep the store running throughout the school year.

Time Travelers – Instructor: Sue Ballou

Grades: ALL

Join the ever-inquisitive Agent Wormold (John Cleese) for this fun-filled interactive trivia game. Wormold invites you to test your knowledge of important events in history -- from ancient to modern times -- through an interactive quiz that features entertaining footage from the History Channel. Four Teams will be divided evenly according to age and prizes will be awarded. Fun and competitive action for all!

Woodshop for Beginners I – Instructor: Peter Haddock

Mr. Haddock is looking for experienced volunteers who could help him run the Wood Shop Enrichments. Please contact Mrs. Wright if you are interested mwright@marbleheadcharter.com

Cost for supplies: $25

This beginner course is designed to introduce the basic tools and skills of wood working. This class is designed for beginning students that have always wanted to make something out of wood. Students will learn how to use many hand tools. All students will make two items to bring home the night of Exhibition: a note pad holder with working clock and game board!

Mr. Haddock began working with wood in his middle school years. This will be his 3rd year at MCCPS teaching students the art and craftsmanship of wood working. He is presently a handyman performing many different trades.

Basketball Team Practice (boys team)– Instructor: Mike Ruth

Note: this activity runs 4:00pm

Team practice for any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade boy who has tried out and is on the active roster for the MCCPS basketball team. Practice will be held Tuesdays and from 2:30-4:00pm.

Dungeons and Dragons- Instructors: Grant Vaucher & Andrew Keenan **8th Grade Students***

Grades: 4/5

Players of D&D create characters that embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (abbreviated as DM, also known as a Game Master or GM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

Government By the People – Instructor: James J. Carrigan, Attorney at Law

Grades: ALL

This course will broaden the student’s interest in American Government. Among the topics we will discuss is the role of Marbleheaders in the American Revolution and the establishment of the United States. Students will visit the Marblehead Museum to view the Pirate Exhibit and possibly a polling place in Lynn, Marblehead or Salem.

Students will also learn about the role of media in elections, how an idea becomes a law, the language of government, the election process and letter writing. Role-playing, polling and brainstorming techniques will be used extensively. Students will also learn about campaign techniques and how to get elected to political office.

Jim Carrigan, is a lawyer with a law practice in Lynn. His experience in government includes serving as a State Representative in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1971 and as a Massachusetts State Senator in 1971-72.

Healthy Friendships- Instructors: Staff from the Marblehead Counseling Center

Grades: Ms. Miller’s Advisory

This will be a structured environment for students to explore and define what a positive peer relationship should be. Using role-plays, classroom activities, video clips, and guided discussion, students will explore topics such as bullying, popularity, conflict resolution, self-esteem building. Through this interactive effort, students will gain a better understanding of the social climate, as well as the ability to make more conscientious choices regarding friends and friendships. Want to tell the principal how to run the school? Want to share your opinions? Here is you chance! This group will review student rules, dress code and other student responsibilities. You will represent your fellow students in advising Ms. Cullen-Hamzeh.

Student Wellness Committee- Instructors: Laura DeSantis & Sarah Hitchcock

Grades: ALL

The Student Wellness Committee will be a discussion group with occasional cooking demonstrations. The student will learn about better nutrition and healthier options. They will also aid in making decision in the kitchen and café. They will also learn about other schools lunch programs and how to make a difference in the school environment. The student will have a voice in making changes for their health and school environment

Saving the World, One Plate At a Time – Instructors: Thomas McEnaney ** 8th grade Student**

Grades: 4/5/6

Help support the MCCPS recycling program by washing our beautiful brand new lunch plates and by taking care of the kitchen and school-wide recycling duties.

Students will work as employees of the nutrition department for this important endeavor. As a result, students will earn community service learning credit (CSL), as well as a voucher for each day they work. The voucher can be redeemed at breakfast, lunch or in the café.

Student Newspaper –Instructors: Brian Driscoll & Employees from HCpro

Grades: 4/5/6

Tutoring with editors from HCPro (a Marblehead healthcare publishing, education, and training company) offers students the opportunity to improve their writing as well as become acquainted with writing professionals. Each week, students will work on writing and editing articles for a student newspaper. The group will publish a final newspaper at the end of the trimester, which will be available in hard copy and on the school’s web site.

Scrapbooking- Instructor: Stephanie Pettigrew

Grades: ALL

FEE: $10- fee is waived if a student brings their own album/book.

Expand you scrapbooking and creative design skills with this enrichment. Students must provide their own pictures. The school will provide materials and supplies, including album. If a student brings his or her own album to work in, the $10 fee is waived.

Yearbook- Instructor: Avery Russell

Here is your chance to put together the MCCPS 2008-2009 yearbook. Students will learn a variety of techniques from how to take a great picture to how to create a page layout.

Design & Build – Instructor Bob Erbetta

Grades: 7th & 8th

Have you ever wanted to learn what NUTSHELL construction is? How to build with Structural PVC Tubing? Students will build various structures to support the schools many storage needs and discover how to design and fabricate (produce) a temporary shelter. Students will also build a selection of unique projects, such as: Recycle carts, sports equipment, furniture, toys, etc. If you want to know more about PVC Tubing – Take a look at the rear parking lot awnings that the 7th & 8th graders built last year in this class.

Destination Imagination- Instructor: Kellie Keenan

Grades: 6/7/8

Destination Imagination is an enrichment where up to seven 6-8th graders will choose a challenge and work together on developing a creative solution. The group will design, produce and present all of their work at a regional (and possibly a State) tournament in the winter. The students may incorporate scenery, props, costumes, etc.....whatever they decide as a team!

Explorations in Self-Portraits- Instructor: Leah Piepgras

Grades: ALL

Explore your sense-of-self, persona, and identity while exploring a variety of art making materials. We will draw, paint, and collage with inspiration from contemporary artists such as Elizabeth Peyton and Chuck Close. Come ready to work!

Gym Games- Instructors: Will Ross, Andy Haley, Nate Fowler*** 8th grade instructors**

Students will learn a variety gym games in a fun and exciting setting.

Histories Mysteries- Instructors: from Wicked Cool for Kids

Grades: ALL

FEE: $55

History's Mysteries uses science to solve exciting mysteries from the past. We will profile paleontologists, archeologists, and geologists who have helped us understand how the past shapes the future. We’ll learn how scientists figured out the right way to put together dinosaur bones. We’ll find out who made cave paintings, and make cave paint to use. We’ll investigate sophisticated medieval machines that could break down castle walls. Then we’ll dig deep to compare earth rocks with moon rocks. Every week there’s a new mystery to solve and a project for family show-and-tell!

If you’ve got a passion for Pokeman, avid for Avatar, or if you’re nuts about Narato, you’ll be mad about manga! Wicked Cool Manga gives the manga maniac eight different human characters to develop and draw using Japanese-style conventions. You’ll get the skills you need to invent and draw your own characters and put them in your own stories.

“Wicked Cool for kids”, Experienced teacher and facilitators offer programs to promote hands-on learning with exciting activities that build confidence and competency in a dynamic and fun way.” All materials included.

Because of the complexity of the baking, this class runs until 3:45!!

Here is your chance to learn the art of pie, tart and bar making. Ms. Vaucher will teach how to make a variety of pie dough, fillings and toppings. Most weeks students will leave with a desert to be cooked at home

Students will have a chance to “JAM” with these 8th grade students.

Taekowndoe- Instuctor: Stephanie Pettigrew

Grades: 4/5/6

Fun martial arts basic workout, where students will learn a martial arts form, self defense and confidence. Students should not wear jeans that day. This is not a ranking program, but a chance for students to learn and improve their skills.

Tickle your Brain- Instructor: Bill Sullivan

Grades: ALL

Student will have a chance to experiment with a variety of brain teasers, logic puzzles and puzzling problems.

Wood Shop III– Instructor: Peter Haddock

Students will build a beautiful Coat Rack from red oak or white birth with four brass hooks.. Students in this class must be serious about expanding their skills and working hard.

Cloning Houseplants and Hydroponics Veggies- Instructor: Nina Cullen-Hamzeh

Grades: ALL

During this Community Service Learning project, students will learn techniques for cloning plants and growing vegetables hydroponically. Activities will include composting biodegradable materials, separating and repotting plants, fertilizing soil, and caring for a 240 gallon fish tank. In the spring, the vegetables will be planted in the school's organic garden.

DARE – Instructor: Officer Cabot Dodge

All students in Ms. Mello’s class are requested to take this class.

Any 5th grader who has not taken DARE can do so in Term III.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a collaborative effort by DARE certified law enforcement officers to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The emphasis of this 10-session program is to help students recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, or other drugs or to engage in violence.

If you are totally thrilled with Trivia Pursuit, just joyful at the thought of Jeopardy, itching with info, this is the Enrichment for you! Each week we meet and share our general knowledge on everything from history to literature to sport to science to movies to…............you name it!

In February, we will participate in the Malden Catholic Quiz Bowl against other middle schools.

Street Latin Dance – Instructor: Gregory Coles

COST: $70

The Street Latin Dance Enrichment Program has two main components, dancing and drumming. The dancing component may include either Latin dancing or African dancing or both. The drumming component may include either Latin drumming or African drumming or both.

While they are separate programs these dancing and drumming cultures are related. With Street Latin Dance, there is some review of the African dances that are the Latin dance predecessors.

The Latin dances themselves include Salsa (Cuban, Puerto Rican and Colombian) Chachacha (Cuban), Merengue (Dominican) and Bachata (Dominican).

These dances have direct relationships with West African dances we teach (under separate

Student Newspaper –Instructors: Brian Driscoll & Employees from HCpro

Grades: 7/8

Number of students: 12 maximum.

Tutoring with editors from HCPro (a Marblehead healthcare publishing, education, and training company) offers students the opportunity to improve their writing as well as become acquainted with writing professionals. Each week, students will work on writing and editing articles for a student newspaper. The group will publish a final newspaper at the end of the trimester, which will be available in hard copy and on the school’s website.

Players of D&D create characters that embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (abbreviated as DM, also known as a Game Master or GM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

Girls will discuss age-appropriate "girl stuff" (relationships, goals, body image, role-models, and much more) in a safe environment.

This is a quiet environment for you to complete homework.

It is recommended that each student sign up for one Independent Study per week. Students may be required by their advisory teacher to take at least one Independent Study.

Students will improve their math skills by working on MCAS type problems. This is a required 2-day Enrichment for identified students. Others may choose to attend on one or both days (Mondays and Fridays).

A MCCPS Musical is finally here! “Into the Woods” is a two- term commitment for Monday enrichment. It involves strong singing and acting skills. You must be brave enough to perform and sing, solo, on stage! The musical, “Into the Woods”, is a wonderful collection of funny and twisted fairy tales mingled together. Rehearsals are Mondays and Fridays during enrichment, for two terms: we plan to perform just after the March exhibition. This is the first MCCPS school musical!

Model Building- Instructor: Mike Ruth

Come and learn the fine art of model building! Students will have a selection of cars, planes, trucks to choose from.

ZUMBA is a combination of Latin and International music and dance themes. You don’t have to know how to dance to do ZUMBA! It is like a party fitness class. Who new you could get a workout by dancing?
