Enrichment

WHAT IS ENRICHMENT?

The MCCPS Enrichment Program is a daily 45-minute period in which parents, community volunteers, and staff work with students on a wide variety of projects and activities. The Enrichment program began in the school’s first year as a means for parents to take an active role in the learning environment of their children and for students to learn from their extended local community. Since then, it has grown to become an integral component of the school’s core commitment to community partnerships. The Enrichment program creates opportunities that connect the school with local community members. In addition to the learning gained from working on projects and participating in activities, students learn about themselves, enhance their skills and talents, and meet and work cooperatively with other members of their community. Parents and other community members have an opportunity to enhance the learning of the children. Community partnerships help create and maintain a healthy school community, enhance the engagement of the students, and provide examples of real life applicability for the skills and habits learned throughout the school year. Anyone with a desire to share what he or she knows with students is invited to join us.

Kids Are Cooking- Meg & John Arbo      Fee:  $60.00 per student  TUESDAYS

Leslie Cunningham-Sabo, PhD, RD, says that integrating nutrition education into the classroom will teach kids to eat healthy foods at a young age, which will help them develop healthy eating patterns for life.   This year, MCCPS is partnering with Kids Are Cooking-Marblehead with an enrichment offering that teaches children how to have fun cooking and eating nutritious (and delicious!) food.  This fall, students will prepare and enjoy fresh fruit smoothies and healthy fall comfort foods.   Students will also learn kitchen safety, proper food handling, how to read nutrition labels and how to make healthy food choices. We’ll integrate community service by preparing food for My Brother’s Table in Lynn and/or LifeBridge in Salem.

Kids Are Cooking- Meg & John Arbo  Fee: $325.00 per student  WED. AFTERNOON SESSION

In this 2 hour, hands-on class, students learn healthy food preparation techniques, nutrition facts, kitchen safety rules, and much more.  Each class begins with preparation of a fruit smoothie, followed by preparation of an entrée or snack, and finally, creation of a healthy-(ish!) dessert.  Throughout the class, instructors and students will discuss nutrition and kitchen/food safety facts as it relates to the recipes being prepared.

Class menus will include recipes for protein packed on-the-go breakfasts, anti-oxidant & fiber rich granolas, lower fat meals prepared with lean meats and seafood, and fun snacks and desserts.

As eloquently stated by author Katie Workman, in “The Mom 100 Cookbook”, children who learn to cook “will understand and appreciate food in a deeper way, they will be comfortable in the kitchen, they will develop broader palates, and they will be able to entertain people, which is an undervalued and ever-shrinking asset. You will be giving them a new place to discover things and be creative."

We will be making a project that will teach students how to take measurements, cut wood using a miter box, drill holes on a drill press, and learn how to glue up their projects.  The project that we will be making this 3rd trimester will be a special birdhouse. Students will enjoy watching birds treasure their creation for years to come.  Student projects will be on show during the night of Exhibition.

Note:   Class time is extended to 3:30 p.m. so students have more time to finish their projects!  All students taking any sports programs need to understand that they cannot leave class early due to any practices.  Enrichment classes are considered regular classes and students should stay the entire time.
