MONDAYS ENRICHMENTS

Academic Support – Instructors: Inclusion Department Grades: ALL Assigned students only based on IEP Team determination. Curriculum support will be provided in small group instruction for students as determined by grade level Inclusion Specialists and the Special Ed Coordinator.

Beading Crafts- Instructor: Laury Lapointe Grades: ALL Number of Students: 15 maximum Each week you will design and make a wearable piece of jewelry. Let you imagination go! You can create a necklace, bracelet, anklet, bookmark.. or something else of your own creation.

Board Games- Instructor: Tim Stonecipher Grades: 4/5/6 Number of Students: 20 maximum Test your skills against Mr. Stoncipher with a variety of board games from OPERATION to Battleship to SORRY! and much more…

Cooking for the Cafe– Instructor: Sarah Hitchcock and Chef DeSantis Grades: ALL Number of Students: 10 maximum Students will help prepare, sample and design the homemade snack food available in the café. Here is your chance to plan what is available at recess.

Fantasy Design- Instructor: Jane Howell Grades: 6/7/8 Number of Students: 15 maximum Let your imagination run wild in this craft workshop. During this enrichment you’ll design a t-shirt, stained glass candleholder, Plaster of Paris mosaics, create shell and button jewelry and work with block prints. STUDENTS WILL NEED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN T-SHIRT AND GLASS JAR.

Fitness Sports – Instructor: Mike Ruth Grades: 4/5/6 Number of Students: 30 maximum Students will participate in a variety of outdoor activities.

Independent Study – Instructor: Michele Gallo Grades: ALL Number of students: 30 maximum This will be a quiet environment for you to complete homework. It is recommended that each student sign up for one Independent Study per week. Students may be required by their advisory teacher to take at least one Independent Study.

MCCPS Musical- Instructor: Adria Smith Must commit to two terms for this performance!* Grades: ALL Number of students: 20 maximum A MCCPS Musical is finally here! “Into the Woods” is a two- term commitment for Monday enrichment. It involves strong singing and acting skills. You must be brave enough to perform and sing, solo, on stage! The musical, “Into the Woods”, is a wonderful collection of funny and twisted fairy tales mingled together. Rehearsals are Mondays during enrichment, for two terms: we plan to perform just after the March exhibition. Please note that there are only a few parts available so, there is limited space. If you do get into the enrichment you must prepare an audition song so, you may be assigned a part. This is the first MCCPS school musical!

Saving the World, One Plate At a Time – Instructors: TBD Grades: 5/6/7/8 Class Limit: 4 students Number of Students: 4-6 maximum Help support the MCCPS recycling program by washing our beautiful brand new lunch plates and by taking care of the kitchen and school-wide recycling duties. Students will work as employees of the nutrition department for this important endeavor. As a result, students will earn community service learning credit (CSL), as well as a $0.50 voucher for each day they work. The voucher can be redeemed at breakfast, lunch or in the café.

Student Council Grades: ALL Number of Students: 20 students Want to tell the principal how to run the school? Want to share your opinions? Here is you chance! This group will review student rules, dress code and other student responsibilities. You will represent your fellow students in advising Ms. Cullen-Hamzeh.

The Happy Ducky Store – Instructor: Kathy Cormier Grades: ALL Number of students: 10 maximum The MCCPS Store continues….the second season was extremely successful, with almost $700 in profits. In this enrichment, students will learn the ins and outs of running a retail business, from advertising to merchandising, selling goods which we’ll collect from various Enrichments and ordering insignia items. Our goal is to keep the store running throughout the school year.

Outdoor Gardening – Instructor: Sue Ballou Grades: 4/5/6 Number of students: 15 maximum Students will work together to help build an “outdoor classroom”, learning various gardening techniques and assist with helpful gardening maintenance of school grounds. Students should come prepared to work outside in the garden.

Tech Troop – Instructor: Matt Cronin Grades: ALL Number of students: 12 maximum Student driven exploration of robotics, website design and programming.

Woodshop for Beginners I – Instructor: Peter Haddock Mr. Haddock is looking for experienced volunteers who could help him run the Wood Shop Enrichments. Please contact Mrs. Wright if you are interested mwright@marbleheadcharter.com Grades: 4/5/6 Number of students: 8 maximum. Cost for supplies: $25 This beginner course is designed to introduce the basic tools and skills of wood working. This class is designed for beginning students that have always wanted to make something out of wood. Students will learn how to use many hand tools. All students will make two items to bring home the night of Exhibition: a note pad holder with working clock and game board!

Mr. Haddock began working with wood in his middle school years. This will be his 3rd year at MCCPS teaching students the art and craftsmanship of wood working. He is presently a handyman performing many different trades. Email: pwhaddock@comcast.net.

Cooking Cookies- Instructors: Laura DeSantis, Kim Camleo & Sarah Hitchcock Grades: ALL Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of cooking techniques when it comes to the art of baking. Students will have hand-on instruction in all aspects of this culinary art.

Dungeons and Dragons- Instructors: Grant Vaucher & Andrew Keenan 8th Grade Students Grades: 4/5 Number of students: 4-6 students Players of D&D create characters that embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (abbreviated as DM, also known as a Game Master or GM) serves as the game’s referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

Government By the People – Instructor: James J. Carrigan, Attorney at Law Grades: ALL This course will broaden the student’s interest in American Government. Among the topics we will discuss is the role of Marbleheaders in the American Revolution and the establishment of the United States. Students will visit the Marblehead Museum to view the Pirate Exhibit and possibly a polling place in Lynn, Marblehead or Salem. Students will also learn about the role of media in elections, how an idea becomes a law, the language of government, the election process and letter writing. Role-playing, polling and brainstorming techniques will be used extensively. Students will also learn about campaign techniques and how to get elected to political office. Jim Carrigan, is a lawyer with a law practice in Lynn. His experience in government includes serving as a State Representative in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1971 and as a Massachusetts State Senator in 1971-72.

Student Newspaper –Instructors: Brian Driscoll & Employees from HCpro Grades: 7/8 Number of students: 10 maximum. Tutoring with editors from HCPro (a Marblehead healthcare publishing, education, and training company) offers students the opportunity to improve their writing as well as become acquainted with writing professionals. Each week, students will work on writing and editing articles for a student newspaper. The group will publish a final newspaper at the end of the trimester, which will be available in hard copy and on the school’s web site.

Swimming (Guppy, Minnow & Fish Levels) Instructor: YMCA Staff Grades: ALL Number of students: 10 maximum. Payment and application due, Tuesday, September 11 Ms. Wright will give you an application. Cost: $5 per lesson – (The YMCA is offering this class to MCCPS at a discounted price. Membership of the YMCA is NOT a pre-requisite.) Where: Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA Students will leave school at 2:30. Class runs from 3:00-3:45. Parents pick up from the YMCA at 3:45. Students must be at Guppy level to participate.

Team Practice– Instructor: Mike Ruth Grades: Team members only Note: this activity runs 4:00pm Team practice for any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student who has tried out and is on the active roster for the MCCPS soccer team. Practice will be held Tuesdays and from 2:30-4:00pm. Pick up is from Reynolds playground (across the street). Players should bring an extra water bottle for these days.

Woodshop II – Instructor: Peter Haddock Mr. Haddock is looking for experienced volunteers who could help him run the Wood Shop Enrichments. Please contact Mrs.Wright if you are interested mwrightl@marbleheadcharter.com

NOTE: Students have the option of staying until 4pm if they choose. Parents must contact Mr. Haddock if their child is staying late on Tuesday. Grades: 5/6 (this class is designed for students who have taken Woodshop I, but aren’t old enough for Wood Shop III) Number of students: 8 Fee: $30 for supplies (supply fee scholarships are available to eligible families)

In this intermediate class, students will continue to use tools learned in Woodshop I as well as having a chance to try a scroll saw. Mr. Haddock has chosen a wonderful project, a wall shelf unit with a drawer, that students will be able to take home on Exhibition Night.

Barry’s Bingo – Instructor: Jeff Barry Grades: 4th & 5th Number of students: 20 Students Educational Bingo!

Creative Writing- Instructor: Laura Smith Grades: 6/7/8 Number of students: 15 Students Find your voice in poetry, essays and short stories. This workshop will teach elements of the various forms of writing, and encourage students to share their work for positive reinforcement. Taught by Laura Smith, Charter School parent, book editor and feature writer.

Manga – Instructors: From Wicked Cool for Kids Grades: 4/5/6/7/8 Number of students: 15 students FEE: $68 If you’ve got a passion for Pokeman, avid for Avatar, or if you’re nuts about Narato, you’ll be mad about manga! Wicked Cool Manga gives the manga maniac eight different human characters to develop and draw using Japanese-style conventions. You’ll get the skills you need to invent and draw your own characters and put them in your own stories. “Wicked Cool for kids”, Experienced teacher and facilitators offer programs to promote hands-on learning with exciting activities that build confidence and competency in a dynamic and fun way.” All materials included.

Design & Build – Instructor Bob Erbetta Grades: 7th & 8th Number of students: 6 Students Have you ever wanted to learn what NUTSHELL construction is? How to build with Structural PVC Tubing? Students will build various structures to support the schools many storage needs and discover how to design and fabricate (produce) a temporary shelter. Students will also build a selection of unique projects, such as: Recycle carts, sports equipment, furniture, toys, etc. If you want to know more about PVC Tubing – Take a look at the rear parking lot awnings that the 7th & 8th graders built last year in this class.

Destination Imagination- Instructor: Kellie Keenan Grades: 6/7/8 Destination Imagination is an enrichment where up to seven 6-8th graders will choose a challenge and work together on developing a creative solution. The group will design, produce and present all of their work at a regional (and possibly a State) tournament in the winter. The students may incorporate scenery, props, costumes, etc…..whatever they decide as a team!

Independent Study – Instructor: Stephanie Pettigrew Grades: ALL Number of Students: 30 maximum This is a quiet environment for you to complete homework. It is recommended that each student sign up for one Independent Study per week. Students may be required by their advisory teacher to take at least one Independent Study.

Knitting – Instructor: Pamela Haley Grades: ALL Number of students: 14 maximum. $10 for the cost of needles and supplies Come and join the knitting club. Learn how to knit the basics. You will have the opportunity to knit your own scarf and other small projects. $5 fee for knitting needles. Yarn will be provided at no extra cost.

Man Town – Instructor: Tim Stonecipher Grades: 7/8 Number of students: 15-20 maximum. Boys will discuss age-appropriate “boy stuff” (relationships, goals, body image, role-models, and much more) in a safe environment.

Note: Parents will be required to sign a Permission Letter.

Outdoor Sports- Instructor: Anna Martin Grades: 4/5/6 Number of students: 15 maximum Students will participate in a variety of outdoor sports.

Pie Making – Instructor: Cathy Vaucher Grades: ALL Number of students: 8 maximum Here is your chance to learn the art of pie making. Ms. Vaucher will teach how to make a variety of pie dough, fillings and toppings. Most weeks students will leave with a pie to be cooked at home. Some pies will include: key lime with graham cracker crust, peanut butter chiffon with cookie crumb and pumpkin with a pate brisse crust…. couldn’t be more delicious..

Spanish- Instructor: Lydia Todd Grades: 6/7/8 Number of Students: 20 maximum This is a beginner’s Spanish course where students will be come familiar with the language, both how it is spoken and written.

  • DUE TO THE SIZE OF THIS PROJECT, THIS CLASS RUNS UNTIL 4PM Number of students: 7 maximum (students must have taken Wood Shop I) Cost for supplies: $50 This class is designed for students with a strong interest in wood working. Students must be able to work safely and independently. The class will make a memorable project and learn how to use many of the power tools we have available in our wood shop. Students in this class must be serious about expanding their skills and working hard. Students will take home a lamp turned on wood lathe, on Exhibition Night.

DARE – Instructor: Officer Cabot Dodge Grade: Ms. Gallo’s Class Only All students in Ms. Gallo’s class must take this class. Ms. Mello’s class will complete their session in Term II D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a collaborative effort by DARE certified law enforcement officers to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The emphasis of this 10-session program is to help students recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, or other drugs or to engage in violence.

Free Drawing – Instructor: Sarah Hitchcock & Greg Bishop Grades: ALL Number of students: 10 maximum In this activity students explore freehand and still-life drawing indoors and weather permitting, we’ll explore the great outdoors. Sketchbook will be provided.

Quiz Bowl – Instructor: Kay O’Dwyer Grades: 5/6/7/8 Number of students: 15 maximum If you are totally thrilled with Trivia Pursuit, just joyful at the thought of Jeopardy, itching with info, this is the Enrichment for you! Each week we meet and share our general knowledge on everything from history to literature to sport to science to movies to…............you name it! In February, we will participate in the Malden Catholic Quiz Bowl against other middle schools.

Street Latin Dance – Instructor: Gregory Coles Grades: ALL Number of Students: 30 maximum. The Street Latin Dance Enrichment Program has two main components, dancing and drumming. The dancing component may include either Latin dancing or African dancing or both. The drumming component may include either Latin drumming or African drumming or both. While they are separate programs these dancing and drumming cultures are related. With Street Latin Dance, there is some review of the African dances that are the Latin dance predecessors. The Latin dances themselves include Salsa (Cuban, Puerto Rican and Colombian) Chachacha (Cuban), Merengue (Dominican) and Bachata (Dominican). These dances have direct relationships with West African dances we teach (under separate programs). Over the number of weeks available kids learn the basic footwork and partnering techniques for all four dances. Based on their proficiency – and the time allowed – patterns, combinations, shines and styling can be added. Independent Study – Instructor: Mike Ruth Grades: ALL Number of Students: 30 maximum This is a quiet environment for you to complete homework. It is recommended that each student sign up for one Independent Study per week. Students may be required by their advisory teacher to take at least one Independent Study.

Moonbase Mission – Instructor: Wicked Cool for Kids Grades: 4/5/6/7/8 Number of students: 20 maximum. CLASS FEE: $68 Get ready for take off! We are gearing up to establish the first colony on the moon! Budding engineers will design rockets and rovers for space and lunar travel. Once colonized, we’ll learn how to create a sustainable habitat, complete with living quarters and our own biomes to grow food on the moon. Moonbase Mission will be a blast!

Saving the World, One Plate At a Time – Instructor: TBD Grades: 5/6/7/8 Number of students: 4 students Help support the MCCPS recycling program by washing our beautiful brand new lunch plates and by taking care of the kitchen and school-wide recycling duties. Students will work as employees of the nutrition department for this important endeavor. As a result, students will earn community service learning credit (CSL), as well as a $0.50 voucher for each day they work. The voucher can be redeemed at breakfast, lunch or in the café.

Starter Band – Instructor: Adria Smith Grades: ALL Number of students: 25 students Start Band is for students who wish to start the 5th-8th grade MCCPS band. This is the perfect chance to play an instrument and join the big band. If you are in 5th grade and wish to join band you MUST take this class unless you take private lessons. Contact Ms. Smith for rentals forms or private lesson recommendations. If you are in 4th grade you must audition, (you’re chance for band comes later in the year). This enrichment serves as a supplement to big band, which meets Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30-8:15am. This is your chance to learn an instrument and perform. Offered Fridays for first term only. It’s free and fun.

Synchronized Swimming – Novice Class – Instructors: YMCA Staff Grades: ALL Number of students: 12 maximun Cost: $7 per lesson (The YMCA is offering this class to MCCPS at a discounted price. (Membership of the YMCA is NOT a pre-requisite.)

Where: Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA pool. Time: 2:45-3pm pre-swim Class begins at 3pm – 4:00pm (Pick up is at 4pm at Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA, 94 Pleasant Street)

Are you a swimmer who loves to dance and perform? Try exploring this spectacular sport that combines swimming, dance, and gymnastics! It looks so simple and easy, but in fact the sport of Synchronized Swimming requires strength, endurance, flexibility, grace and artistry, and exceptional breath control. Synchronized swimming encompasses choreography and the use of movement to interpret the mood of the music while, of course, in water.

The sport of Synchronized Swimming is gaining in popularity. Colleges like Stanford University, Ohio State, Wheaton College and Meredith College, NC, have Synchro teams and many offer scholarships. This beginner program at the Marblehead YMCA is a great place for people who are interested in the sport to begin.

Way Back Machine- Instructor Nina Cullen-Hamzeh Grades: ALL Number of Students: 20 maximum When did the Beatles produce their first record? Who ate the first pizza? When was the first fireworks display? Using multi-media resources, students will create a timeline of historical events in the 5/6 grade hallway. Put the pieces of the past together for your fellow students.

Zumba- Instructors: Lisa Gillis Grades: ALL Number of students: 15 students ZUMBA is a combination of Latin and International music and dance themes. You don’t have to know how to dance to do ZUMBA! It is like a party fitness class. Who new you could get a workout by dancing?
