Spanish
Throughout the five-year program, students engage in a comprehensive study of Spanish. In grades 4, 5, 6, and 7, the language is explored twice a week, while in 8th grade, students have the opportunity to enjoy four classes per week. The approach followed emphasizes effective communication and the establishment of a strong grammatical foundation. In this non-immersion setting, a solid understanding of grammar enables students to confidently express themselves in both written and oral forms.
At our school, the World Language Department is committed to fostering global citizenship and cultural understanding through the study of the Spanish language. Our program is carefully designed to support students in developing the foundational skills necessary for effective communication, while encouraging a genuine appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures.
In Grades 4 and 5, students focus on building a strong vocabulary base through engaging, interactive lessons. Using songs, games, storytelling, and visual aids, learners acquire essential words and phrases that help them understand and use Spanish in everyday contexts. Emphasis is placed on listening comprehension, accurate pronunciation, and simple conversational expressions.
In Grades 6 through 8, instruction shifts toward a deeper exploration of grammatical structures. Students learn to form complete sentences, use correct verb conjugations, and apply grammatical rules to reading, writing, and conversation. Through real-life scenarios, project-based learning, and cultural exploration, students begin to communicate more fluently and with greater confidence.
Our curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts World Languages Curriculum Framework, ensuring that students meet grade-appropriate proficiency targets in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication. We strive to prepare our students not only for continued language study but also for meaningful engagement in a diverse, interconnected world.
